 Pandemic Still Lives 


I am a COVID survivor.While I was ill my days were not ordinary at all, but now they are again. Making each humble drawing is my way of honoring those we have lost and the accumulated, ordinary, moments of their lives.

These drawings began as a meditation on the catastrophe that expands all around us  while days go on in their humble, ordinary, lucky-to-be-alive way: food is prepared, napkin rings arranged, swing state postcards sent, work accomplished.

Each image documents a date, what is on the kitchen table,  and  the number of worldwide deaths COVID-19 deaths on that date.

Geraniums, African Daisies, Puzzle Piece...2,815,020

J. brought the pandemic rescue puppies over. They were skinny and sick but overjoyed to poke around in the geraniums. The little one brought me a puzzle piece. Who knows how long that little bit of cardboard had been under the front porch. It was from a puzzle of the zodiac that my mother used to bring out on long snowy nights in the seventies, and we would piece together our zodiac signs. Transported in a shoe box, that puzzle went from the east to west coast, and then down the Pacific shoreline to me, and I haven't thought about it since my father died in 2014.  I choose this puppy, the puzzle piece safe in his soft mouth,  who brings me a gift of memory, the return of something lost.

January 27, 2021.....Winter blossoms like fireworks....2,178,099

It takes a week for the relief of a safe inauguration to set in ....as  deaths continue to mount. Flowers from the garden make a small celebration,  purple daisies the color of Michelle Obama's outfit at the inauguration,  salvia, the hue of Kamala Harris' dress, and yellow daisies the color of Amanda Gorman's coat, collected in the  bowl from my grandmother who gave birth to my father during the Spanish flu epidemic; (I wish I could ask her about that now)...all balanced on the "Atlas of Human Anatomy", as thick as the Bible that Joe Biden used to swear his oath of office.
